Tattoo Removal

A tattoo used to be a permanent and irreversible adornment to one’s skin. However, in recent years dermasurgeons have developed safe and effective techniques to successfully remove unwanted tattoos.

A tattoo can be removed in a number of ways and with varying degree of success, depending on how it was originally done, where it is, what size it is and the type of pigment used. For instance, professionally applied tattoos tend to penetrate the deeper layers of the skin at uniform levels. This uniformity allows dermasurgeons to use techniques that remove broader areas of inked skin at the same depth. Homemade tattoos are often applied with an uneven hand and their removal may be more difficult. Deeper blue and black ink colors are particularly difficult to remove. Professional tattoos made with some of the newer inks and pastel colors may also be difficult to remove entirely.

In the past, a variety of methods have been used to remove tattoos, including skin grafting, dermabrasion (the top layers of skin are rubbed using mechanical means), acid de-tattooing and vaporisation (using carbon dioxide lasers). These treatments caused scarring in a large number of cases.

Newer laser tattoo removal techniques can eliminate your tattoo with minimal side effects. In this technique pulses of laser light are directed into the tattoos. The light passes harmlessly through the top layer of the skin, but is absorbed by the pigment particles in the tattoo. The particles heat up and are shattered into smaller pieces which can be removed by the body’s immune system. The treatment only takes a few minutes but it can be uncomfortable or even painful for some people. If you have a very large tattoo, expect the feeling to be a little more intense. Also the sensitivity of the area where the tattoo is located matters.

Most patients do not require any anesthesia. However, depending on the location of the tattoo and the pain threshold for the patient, the physician may elect to use some form of anesthesia

Lasers have become the standard treatment because they offer a “bloodless,” low risk, highly effective approach with minimal side effects. In many cases, multiple treatments may be required. As each treatment session may cost as much as $150 or more depending on the size of the tattoo so the price of removal can really add up to be very expensive.

As an alternative, a more cost effective and less painful version called Fading Away works pretty well and takes several months to see the final benefits of the treatment. This is done by the use of rubs and creams in combination together, they break down, and then they are disposed of by your body. Over a period of time you will see the tattoo becoming lighter and less noticeable, eventually fading away.

So if you are reading this and you do not have a tattoo yet, stop! If you are already looking for ways to remove a tattoo that you do not yet have, you are not a good candidate for a tattoo in the first place. Really think about what is being conveyed here. A tattoo is a commitment for life just like getting a pet or having a child. If you are already looking to ditch it, before it’s even become part of your skin, your body and your life, please reconsider the decision to get a tattoo.
